The Artist Review

The Artist wowed audiences at the famous Cannes films festival. The team behind this year's Leeds Film Festival fought hard to make sure it closed Leeds Film Festival and good god, I'm glad they won the battle. The Artist is a truly beautiful and breath taking film.

Director Michael Hazanavicius took a big risk making a black and white silent feature film In a world were 3D is ruining cinema and Michael Bay is making over the top, explosion filled rubbish films, but in cinema risks often pay off.

The Artist tells the story of George Valentin, a huge silent film star in 1927, who becomes worried that talkies are starting to emerge in "HollywoodLand" and there will be no place for him. Peppy Miller becomes the next big thing after taking some advice from George. George tries to produce his own silent films in a talkie world and fails, he then fades away, thinks about suicide on more then one occasion before Peppy herself helps George out in a way he never thought possible.

Brilliant... the first thing I thought when leaving Hyde Park Picture House after The Artist had finished. I was actually a bit upset that it had finished, I could of sat and watched it all night. Not many films have that effect on me.

The acting is wonderful, all the actors had to be on top form as this was a silent film, dialogue was not used so the actors had to tell us the story through mostly body language. The direction is amazing, sometimes I forgot I was in 2011, it made me feel like a 20's cinema goer. George has a pet dog, which almost stole the show, its a brilliant piece of acting by the dog, I guarantee the dog will make you laugh, laugh a lot.

I urge you all to go see The Artist, a few days ago I was writing down my top ten films of the year and The Artist shoots straight to the top of that list.

The Artist is released in the UK on December 30th and please all of you go and see it.

The Artist - 5/5

  1. I still have yet to see several films (War Horse, The Descendants, Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close, and several other) but my favorite film of the year. Wonderful review for an incredible film!
